Bodega & Cavas de Weinert

Bodega Y Cavas de Weinert is located in Luján de Cuyo, a small town on the outskirts of the city of Mendoza, in western Argentina. It sits at the foot of the Andes Mountains in a region world-famous for its wine production, in particular for the Malbec grape. The winery was founded in 1975 by Don Bernardo Weinert, a Brazilian of German origin. With “wein,” the German word for wine as part of his name, it seemed inevitable that Don Bernardo would make it his life’s work.

His fascination with wine prompted him to take on an extensive and difficult restoration of an old, but architecturally significant winery, originally built in 1890 by a Spanish family. He was joined in the venture by Rául de la Mota, the father of modern Argentinian winemaking, and named the country’s best oenologist of the 20th Century.

Outfitted with the latest winemaking technology, the estate produced the region’s first 100% Malbec in 1977. In 1996, Hubert Weber, a Swiss oenologist joined the operation. The bodega is now managed by Don Bernardo’s daughter, Iduna Weinert, who has a degree in international business. The team works closely with grape-growing families in the region.

The winery, with a capacity of 4 million liters, has two majestic underground cellars where the wines rest for a minimum of two years in large French and Slovenian oak barrels, which may be up to 100 years old. Elaboration is traditional, following the classic style of Bordeaux.
