Chateau des Fines Roches Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Chateau des Fines Roches Châteauneuf du Pape

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • The terroir and in particular the pebbles allow the vineyards to take the heat of the day, as Chateau des Fines Roches Châteauneuf du Pape is grown in one of the hottest areas of the region.
  • The vineyards are head-pruned to protect them from the drought and strong mistral wind.

Varietal Composition: 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre

Elaboration: Chateau des Fines Roches Châteauneuf-du-Pape is produced from a blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and lesser percentages of other varieties. The vines are an average of 60 years old grown in a rocky terroir of clay soils. The wine is aged for 12 months in tanks or foudres.

The vineyards of this wine appellation are cultivated on an area of 3200 hectares at about 120 meters of altitude. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is located on the left bank of the Rhône between the AOC* of Vacqueyras, Lirac and Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages. The soil is mainly composed of red clay and rolled pebbles, it allows the wines to have a good ageing potential all the while being rich in aromas.

Tasting Notes: The basic 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers baskets of raspberries and strawberries but not much else in the way of complexity. It’s pleasantly full-bodied, with sufficient grip and a slightly briary character that emerges on the mouthwatering finish. It should drink well for up to a decade.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

In the 1930s, Chateau des Fines Roches, a very impressive 19th-century castle complete with turrets, was purchased by Louis Mousset. Upon his death, his daughter, Catherine, inherited the vineyards around the chateau and rights to the brand. The chateau itself is an upmarket hotel, restaurant, and spa.
