Colterenzio Pinot Bianco “Weisshaus”

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • Pinot Blanc from up to 40 year-old vines, vertical espalier and pergola trained vineyards.
  • Vineyards at an altitude of 1480 feet, soils are morainal with gravel and calcium carbonate and the microclimate is cool with striking contrasts between day and night time temperatures.
  • Yields: 50hl/ha.

Varietal Composition: 100% Pinot Bianco

Elaboration: Fermentation takes place both in stainless steel tanks and in large oak casks at a constant temperature of 65ﹾF. The new wines refines separately for 10 months on fine lees which are regularly stirred up. The final blend refines shortly before bottling.

Tasting Notes:  Bright yellow color with green nuances; attractive ripe orchard fruits on the nose; elegant and multi-faceted, yeasty with hints of honeydew melon and citrus fruits supported by a firm acidity, typical of the vintage and leading to a flinty aftertaste. This Pinot Blanc is distinguishing for its elegant aroma of ripe apple combined with straw a zesty acidity.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Colterenzio is one of the newest wineries in South Tyrol, composed of over 300 families working together.  This is a new-generation cooperative that smashes preconceptions, proving that a humble “coop” can consistently deliver some of the most transparent, expressive wines in the top flight region of Alto Aldige.

Member-winegrowers farm their grapes on a total of 300 hectares; the vineyards are located in one of the best wine growing sub-districts of Alto Adige, on altitudes ranging from 230 to 650 meters with 12 different varieties cultivated.  Ecology is a driving principle here – Farming is sustainable and the winery was built with permaculture in mind.
