Colterenzio Pinot Nero "Classic"

Colterenzio Pinot Nero “Classic”

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • West facing slopes at altitudes between 1,300-1,640 feet.
  • Soils are morainal mixed with clay and eroded porphyry.
  • Pergola-trained vines and more recently planted vertical espalier-trellised vines.
  • A rich example of Pinot Nero in the context of this region, which makes it stand out.

Varietal Composition: 100% Pinot Nero

Elaboration: The crushed grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of approx. 77ﹾF. The skins are kept constantly immersed in the embryonic wine by pushing them down gently. The new wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and is refined in concrete tanks and large wooden casks for at least 6 months.

Tasting Notes:  Brilliant medium ruby red with a fresh, fruity nose, reminiscent of red currants and black cherry; medium-bodied, round with soft tannins and ripe berry flavours well integrated with the acidity. A stylish and elegant wine. Ripe, sweet tannins and a typical varietal character reminiscent of morello cherry and blackberry.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Colterenzio is one of the newest wineries in South Tyrol, composed of over 300 families working together.  This is a new-generation cooperative that smashes preconceptions, proving that a humble “coop” can consistently deliver some of the most transparent, expressive wines in the top flight region of Alto Aldige.

Member-winegrowers farm their grapes on a total of 300 hectares; the vineyards are located in one of the best wine growing sub-districts of Alto Adige, on altitudes ranging from 230 to 650 meters with 12 different varieties cultivated.  Ecology is a driving principle here – Farming is sustainable and the winery was built with permaculture in mind.
