Klassen Merlot

Klassen Wines Merlot

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • The wines coming out of the Sierra Foothills are representative of some of the finest wine values in California.
  • From a historical perspective, as the oldest growing region in California, to its current position as home to some of the most exciting winemakers in the state, the Sierra Foothills is a good place to watch.

Varietal Composition: 94% Merlot, 6% Durif

Elaboration: The 2016 Klassen Merlot continues the fine trend of producing full bodied Merlots by blending in small parcels of impactful varieties such as Durif. The Dry Creek Valley affords this variety the long hang time it requires for development of flavor and color.  The wine spends 24 months in old French oak after fermentation then another 12 months in bottle.

Tasting Notes: The most classic of all Merlot characteristics – ripe dark cherry flavors are enhanced by these varieties. Klassen Merlot shows lots of deep dark red color in the glass.  The aroma is of dark cherry mixed with hints of earth and wood.   The mouthfeel is full and rich with solid tannins and nice grip.  The wine is more earthy than fruity and is therefore a great partner to food.  Rich stews and slow braised meats are the best partners.
