Vignerons de Saumur Blanc “Les Epinats”

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • This Lieu-dit’s vineyard plots are located on a plateau on gently sloping north-facing hills. The large nearby forests serve as a windbreak and have an influence on the microclimate.
  • There are two main soil types ; shallow, pebbly soil called terre à silex (flinty soil) and less pebbly soil with more clay due to the deterioration of Jurassic limestone (silification). This combination tends to promote the ripening of healthy grapes.

Varietal Composition: 100% Chenin Blanc

Elaboration: After crushing and destemming, the grapes of Chenin were pressed. Fermentation at low temperature (17 to 19° C) during 2 weeks. Cold setting for 24 hours. Aging in stainless steel tanks on fine lees for 3 to 4 months. Bottled in cellars dug out of tufa, it continues to age in bottle in these ideal and natural conditions.

Tasting Notes: Pale yellow color with greenish highlights. Powerful bouquet features hints of lime and fruit. Full-bodied and suave on the palate. Aromatic, rich and fresh. Structure and a long aftertaste.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

In 1957, around forty winegrowers grouped together to confront the economic difficulties of the era, pooling far more than mere financial concerns. At the time, Robert, Marcel, Yvon, Geneviève and the others, hailing from the same terroir, hewn from the same rock and sharing the same time-honoured values, set up their cooperative at the top of the hill in Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg. “They chose to share their experience, their expertise, and their dreams”
