Vignerons de Saumur Vouvray "Rosnay"

Vignerons de Saumur Vouvray “Rosnay”

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • “Rosnay,”the name of the lieu-dit where the vineyards are located, sits on a south-east-facing plateau overlooking the Loire.
  • It is near the city of Tours, 150 miles west of Paris.
  • “Perruche” type clay soil containing a great deal of flint both above and below the surface. A layer of silt, sand and clay overlays a calcareous bedrock.
  • The vines average 50 years in age and cover an area of 13.59 acres.

Varietal Composition: 100% Chenin Blanc

Elaboration: Slow pneumatic pressing with separation of the first straining juices. Settling of the musts for at least 24 hours. Low-temperature fermentation to enhance the delicacy of the aromas. Alcoholic fermentation is stopped by cold fortification to preserve the aromatics. Ageing for approximately 6 months in stainless steel vats before bottling.

Tasting Notes: Pale gold in color. A delicate flinty nose with touches of citrus fruit supported by a good lively structure. It is medium-dry and well-balanced.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

In 1957, around forty winegrowers grouped together to establish this impressive cooperative set no the top of a hill in the village of Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg.  Their Saumur Blanc “Les Pouches” has become an important staple for us here at Grape, and their various single vineyard Cabernet Franc driven cuvees are nothing short of astonishing for the price.
