Weingut Wohlmuth Riesling Kitzeck-Sausa

Weingut Wohlmuth Riesling Kitzeck-Sausal

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • Family run winery for nearly 200 years.
  • Because the vineyards are extremely steep (90% inclines), the grapes must be hand- picked from sparse slate soils.
  • Weingut Wohlmuth engages in Eco-friendly vinification practices, using no herbicides or pesticides.

Varietal Composition: 100% Riesling

Elaboration: The Sausal region, which stretches around the South-Styrian village of Kitzeck, ranks among Austria´s most historical winegrowing areas. The vineyards are planted at altitudes of 380 to 650 meters above sea level. With an average steepness of up to 80%, they belong to Europe´s steepest vineyard sites. The soil is Paleozoic slate (red and black). The grapes are selected and hand picked. There is no crushing and they are gently, very slowly, pressed. The fermentation is slow in stainless steel tanks at temperatures around 20°C.  The aging and batonage takes several months.

Tasting Notes: Crushed lemon leaf and freshly grated lemon zest make for a lifted and invigorating nose. The palate continues in this pristine, lemony fashion, brimming with mouthwatering freshness and utter charm. It offers taut slenderness with a zingy, bone-dry flavor. ~Wine Enthusiast

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Kitzeck im Sausal is a village that deserves high praise. That’s because it boasts the highest-in-elevation wine estates in Austria. But it takes more than a mountaintop to create great wine. It takes many generations of the Wohlmuth family who have been making 100% single-estate-grown wine here since 1803!
