Strong Arms Bordeaux White

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • A classic white wine at an incredible value.
  • The importer, Dan Phillips, has a history of uncovering gems from all over the world and this one is no exception.

Varietal Composition: 60% Sauvignon, 40% Sémillon

Elaboration: This wine comes from the Canon-Fronsac, Bordeaux region in France. The vines are 11 years old and the soils are clay limestone with silica. This vineyard yields 65 HL/Hectare. The winemaker is Oriol Illa.

Tasting Notes: Drama, electricity, nerve, acidic, racy, excitement, alive. Choose your descriptor. This is a drop dead gorgeous bottle of white wine. It evokes classic Sauvignon Blanc and also is clearly a Bordeaux Blanc with breed and class way beyond its price point. Bright color that seems to sparkle like a neon light. Lifted perfume of honeysuckle, ripe melon, meyer lemon, passionfruit with just a hint of cream and vanilla. Lovely tension on the palate between plush palate and racy acidity. Grip, length, and overwhelming pleasure.

BACKGROUND

Canon-Fronsac is often called the Tuscany of Bordeaux because it is the most hilly part of the region. The vineyards for Strong Arms are at the very top of the hill and share the same soil as its rich neighbors St. Emillion and Castillon. The micro-climate is perfect for ripening Merlot and Cabernet Franc delivering ripeness and structure with silky tannins. The vines undulate with perfect exposure and surely must be one of the hidden gems of Bordeaux. There is a forest next door with truffles and a lake right in the middle of the vines.
